Funeral Poems for Dad

Poetry to read at a Father’s memorial service

On this page, we provide several funeral poems for Dad that can be read at a father’s funeral or memorial service. A memorial poem can also be included in the funeral program. Or, a single poem or funeral verse can be used to set a theme for the service. The same funeral poem can be used in Dad’s eulogy, on the service folder, on place cards, on bookmarks and on thank you notes. For more ideas, download our book, Planning a Celebration of Life.

Funeral Poetry for Dad

DAD
We’ll always remember
that special smile,
that caring heart,
that warm embrace,
you always gave us.
You being there
for Mom and us
through good and bad times,
no matter what.
We’ll always remember
you Dad because
there’ll never be another one
to replace you in our hearts,
and the love we will always
have for you.

Goodbye To My Dad

Goodbye Dad, I had to say
A few months ago on a cold winter day
I’ll remember the good times and try not to be sad
But saying goodbye still hurts so bad
I miss you more then I can express
My love for you will never grow less
I keep trying to imagine how I will go on
I realize tomorrow is another dawn
I know you’re in heaven above
Looking down on us with all your love
Only to whisper in our ear
Remember that I’ll never stopped loving you dear
I’ll always remember the good times we had
Remember the man, my wonderful Dad
I’ll remember you each and every day
And if I need to talk to you, I’ll just sit down and pray
One day we’ll be together again
To talk about all the places we been
Until the time I’ll always treasure
Having you for a Dad was such a great pleasure
By Debra Marie Stratton-VanBuskirk

God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagles flight,
The joy of a morning spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,
Then God combined these qualities,
when there was nothing more to add,
He knew His masterpiece was complete, and so, He called it DAD.

Not, How Did He Die, But How Did He Live?

Not how did he die, but how did he live?
Not what did he gain, but what did he give?
These are the units to measure the worth
Of a man as a man, regardless of birth.
Not, what was his church, nor what was his creed?
But had he befriended those really in need?
Was he ever ready, with word of good cheer,
To bring back a smile, to banish a tear?
Not what did the sketch in the newspaper say,
But how many were sorry when he passed away.

Funeral poems for Dad

Our father kept a garden
A garden of the heart
He planted all good things
That gave our lives a start

He turned us to the sunshine
And encouraged us to dream
The seeds of what we’ll be

We are our father’s garden
We are his legacy

Irish Blessing

May the road rise up to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
And, until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand

That Man Is a Success adapted from Ralph Waldo Emerson

That man is a success
Who has lived well,
Laughed often and loved much;
Who has gained the respect
Of intelligent men
And the love of children;

Who has filled his niche
And accomplished his task
Who leaves the world better than he found it,
Who has never lacked appreciation of earth’s beauty
Or failed to express it;
Who looked for the best in others
And gave the best he had.
